SUMAC 250g

$4.00

Sumac is spice that is popular in the Middle East. This dark red burgundy spice is most commonly used in Middle Eastern cuisines where it is used as a seasoning or for sprinkling on salads and rice. With its lovely tangy, citrusy flavour, sumac also makes an excellent rub for grilled meats and especially fish, or it is delicious when mixed with yoghurt and other spices such as chilli, cumin or coriander to make simple marinades & dressings. For something a little different, try adding a dash to the top of hummous for a new taste. You can also use a sprinkling of this pretty purple spice as a garnish in the same way paprika is sometimes used. Try it in salads or sprinkled over buttery rice.

Sumac comes from the seeds of a small tree bearing the same name, which are grounded into a red – brownish powder, with a slightly sour taste.

Sumac is one of the main ingredients in the spice mix Zaatar along with sesame seeds and dried thyme. With its clean tasting citrus flavours and balanced mix of fruity and tart, it adds that essential brightness and zing to grilled chicken or fish, blanched vegetables, or rice. It’s superb over salads, tomatoes, cucumbers even raw onions.
